On our Croatian road trip, we traveled from north to south by car, with a few unforgettable detours into Bosnia and Montenegro along the way.

Our journey began in Zagreb, Croatia’s vibrant capital. From historic streets in Upper Town to the bustling Ban Jelačić Square and the colorful Dolac Market, Zagreb is full of charm and culture. We loved climbing Lotrščak Tower, exploring museums, and ending the day at the Zagreb 360° Observation Deck for panoramic city views.
Motovun – Hilltop Magic
Next, Motovun was visited, a medieval hilltop town in Istria celebrated for its truffles, vineyards, and sweeping views over the surrounding valley. Time was spent wandering cobblestone streets, soaking in the scenery, and enjoying local wine, making it an idyllic stop for a relaxed taste of Istria’s charm.
Rovinj – Coastal Charm
A short drive from Motovun leads to Rovinj, one of Croatia’s most photogenic coastal towns. With its colorful harbor, winding cobblestone streets, and lively waterfront cafés, Rovinj truly feels like stepping into a painting—best enjoyed while wandering aimlessly and lingering by the sea.
Pula – Roman History
Nearby Pula is famous for its Roman amphitheater, one of the best-preserved in Europe, as well as a mix of Roman ruins and Adriatic charm. A stop here is perfect for history buffs and photographers alike.
Split – Historic & Lively
Driving down the coast, Split is a must-see for its vibrant Diocletian’s Palace, bustling waterfront, and lively Old Town. It’s also a great base for exploring nearby islands or taking a scenic drive along the coast.

A quick detour brings you to Trogir, a small medieval town near Split. Its well-preserved Old Town and fortress, winding streets, and historic architecture make it perfect for a few hours of wandering and photography.
Dubrovnik – The King’s Landing
Of course, no trip to Croatia is complete without Dubrovnik. Known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” its ancient city walls, terracotta rooftops, and stunning coastal views are unforgettable. Walking the city walls early in the morning helps avoid crowds and capture incredible photos.

This stunning medieval coastal town lies across the border in Montenegro. Expect about 2.5–3 hours on the road(roughly 92 km), including border formalities — the scenic drive along the Adriatic is part of the experience.
