The Perfect Day Trip or Stop Along The Way

On our way from the capital Zagreb, we headed west towards the Istrian Peninsula and made a pit stop in Motovun, Croatia – the highest hilltop town in Istria adorned with walkable medieval walls.

Located about two hours from Zagreb, Motovun is a small medieval hilltop town surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and rolling countryside.

With its stone streets, panoramic views, and world-famous truffles, it’s one of the most unique destinations in Istria.

Arriving in Motovun, Croatia

As we headed west from Zagreb, we made a quick detour to visit Motovun, a historic hilltop town overlooking the picturesque Mirna River Valley. This charming medieval village is a must-see for anyone exploring Istria, Croatia.

Parking in Motovun can be a bit tricky, but we found a convenient spot near the cemetery just outside the town walls. Walking among headstones that date back over a thousand years gave us an immediate sense of the town’s rich history.

From there, we took the steep cobblestone road up to Motovun’s ancient city walls. While the climb is short, it definitely gets your heart pumping—but the panoramic views at the top make every step worthwhile. Exploring Motovun’s narrow streets and historic ramparts is one of the most memorable experiences in Istria.

Eating Truffles in Motovun

Motovun is famous for its Istrian truffles, often called the “black diamonds of Istria.” The surrounding forests are one of the best places in the world to find both black and white truffles, making this a must-visit destination for food lovers.

Naturally, our first stop was lunch.

We headed to Restaurant Hotel Kaštel, located right along the town walls. Ordering truffle pasta here is practically a rite of passage when visiting Motovun — and it was AH-MAZINGLY delicious.

Rich, creamy pasta topped with freshly shaved truffles might just be the best way to experience the flavors of Istria. Afterwards though, we definitely had to walk off the pasta, so we went on a hike around the city walls to take in all the views 😍

Walking the Motovun City Walls

After indulging in truffle pasta, we definitely needed to walk it off.

So we took a stroll along the Motovun city walls, one of the best things to do in this tiny town. The walls wrap around the hilltop and provide stunning 360-degree views of the Istrian countryside, vineyards, and forests below.

It’s the perfect place to slow down, take photos, and appreciate just how peaceful this part of Croatia really is.

A Small Town with Big History

Despite having fewer than 1,000 residents, Motovun has a fascinating history dating back to medieval times. Its fortified walls, Venetian architecture, and narrow stone streets make it feel like stepping back in time.

Fun fact: Legendary race car driver Mario Andretti and his twin brother were actually born in Motovun, Croatia! 🇭🇷

Why Motovun Is Worth the Stop?

Motovun may be small, but it’s absolutely worth adding to any Croatia itinerary, especially if you’re exploring the Istrian Peninsula.

Between the truffles, medieval charm, and breathtaking hilltop views, this tiny town delivers an unforgettable experience.

And for me, Motovun will forever be remembered for one thing: that incredible truffle pasta 🤤

Goodbye, Motovun! We will forever remember you for your amazing truffle pasta 🤤
