A curated breakdown of the best neighborhoods, hotels, and unique rentals in Dubrovnik, Croatia:

When choosing where to stay in Dubrovnik, it’s good to know that great views are practically everywhere.

Think about walkability, amenities, and the kind of vibe you want: historic charm inside the city walls, or a quieter, more relaxed base just outside.

Overview of Dubrovnik Neighborhood Areas:

  • Old Town: The historic heart of Old Town Dubrovnik, completely surrounded by medieval stone walls. Staying inside the Old Town places you steps from the city’s most famous landmarks, charming cafés, and restaurants, as well as Stradun, the lively main street that runs through the center of the city.
  • Ploče: Located just east of the Old Town near Ploče Gate, this area is known for its breathtaking Adriatic views and upscale hotels. Ploče offers a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere while still being only a short walk from the Old Town—making it a popular choice for couples or travelers seeking a luxury stay.
  • Pile: Situated on the west side of the Old Town near Pile Gate, this area is one of the most convenient places to stay for first-time visitors. It provides easy access to the city walls and is close to transportation hubs where buses and taxis arrive, as well as views of the nearby Lovrijenac Fortress.
  • Lapad & Babin Kuk: These coastal neighborhoods offer a more relaxed seaside atmosphere with beaches, waterfront promenades, and resort-style hotels. Located a short bus ride from the Old Town, Lapad and Babin Kuk are ideal for travelers looking for beach access, sunset views, and a quieter place to unwind after exploring the city.
  • Gruž: Home to Port of Gruž, this neighborhood is more local and budget-friendly. With ferry connections, markets, and frequent buses running to the Old Town, Gruž is a practical base for travelers planning island trips or looking for more affordable accommodations.

Unique Dubrovnik Stays You Probably Didn’t Know About

If you’ve ever dreamed of staying somewhere truly unique, Dubrovnik offers an unforgettable option—a lighthouse stay along the Adriatic coast.

While not every lighthouse in Croatia is open to overnight guests, a few have been converted into private rentals, offering 360-degree sea views, serene surroundings, and the ultimate waterfront experience.

Imagine waking up to the sound of waves crashing on the rocks below, watching the sunrise over the Adriatic, and enjoying complete privacy away from the bustling Old Town. It’s perfect for couples seeking a romantic getaway or travelers looking for a one-of-a-kind experience.

BOOK THIS LIGHTHOUSE

Most lighthouse accommodations are slightly outside the Old Town, so a rental car or taxi is needed to reach the city center. However, the trade-off is worth it: peace, panoramic views, and a true sense of isolation by the sea.

For those interested, check platforms like Airbnb or specialized boutique rentals for lighthouses near Dubrovnik—some even include amenities like small kitchens, terraces, and cozy living spaces inside the historic structures.

👉 YES, we definitely added it to our bucket list!

Quick Tips for Booking Where to Stay in Dubrovnik?

  • Book Early: Dubrovnik is popular year‑round — booking months in advance gets you better choices and prices.
  • Walkability: Staying near the Old Town or Pile Gate means less time on buses or taxis and more time immersing in history and sights.
  • Views vs. Convenience: Ploče offers incredible sea views and peace, but involves some hills to climb.
  • Public Transport: Areas like Lapad and Gruž are a short bus ride from Old Town and often more budget‑friendly, but not as walkable.

Travel tip: For your final destination, book accommodations that offer airport transfers or easy transportation options—it makes departure day far more relaxed and stress-free.
