Is it possible to see Kotor in a day?
Yes, it can be done… but an overnight visit is highly recommended!
Nearby cities (easy by car or bus, 1–4 hours):
- Perast, Montenegro – 12 km (7.5 miles), ~20 min
- Budva, Montenegro – 23 km (14 miles), ~30 min
- Herceg Novi, Montenegro – 44 km (27 miles), ~1 hour
- Dubrovnik, Croatia – 95 km (59 miles), ~2 hours
- Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina – 160 km (99 miles), ~3.5 hours
Although day trips are an option, slowing down and spending the night completely transforms the experience. Once the cruise crowds thin and the day-trippers leave, the atmosphere becomes far more peaceful and intimate. You get to experience golden hour over the bay, quiet evenings by the water, and early mornings before the town fully wakes up— arguably the most beautiful time of day.
Staying overnight also allows more time to wander without a schedule, enjoy a slower dinner along the waterfront, and explore beyond the main viewpoints. We stayed for two nights and wish we stayed longer.
Getting to the Bay of Kotor:
After crossing into Montenegro, the landscape shifts to dramatic mountains, and winding, storybook roads (*not for the faint of heart if you are afraid of heights!). Montenegro may be a small country, but it’s packed with medieval towns, steep roads, tranquil bays, and so much history.
Fun fact: the Bay of Kotor is often called Europe’s southernmost fjord – but that’s incorrect – these mountains were not carved by glaciers. It’s actually a ria, a submerged river canyon framed by steep cliffs plunging into the Adriatic.
First Glimpses of the famous Church:
As we followed the scenic coastal road, the iconic Our Lady of the Rocks came into view, rising effortlessly from the water. It was striking even from a distance— but the real experience began once we visited the island by boat (more on that soon).

A Dinner to Remember at Galion Restaurant
After a day exploring Kotor Old Town, we freshened up and made our way to dinner at Galion Restaurant — a spot recommended by Rick Steves that more than lived up to the hype.
Even with a light rain falling, the sweeping views of the Bay of Kotor felt straight out of a postcard, making it one of the most memorable dining experiences of our time in Montenegro.

The food was just as unforgettable as the setting. Each dish highlighted the very best of Adriatic cuisine with thoughtful preparation and beautiful presentation.
The service was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming—striking that perfect balance between refined and relaxed, without ever feeling overly touristy.
Between the stunning waterfront views, exceptional cuisine, and effortless elegance, it’s the ideal way to unwind after a day of sightseeing— even if the weather doesn’t fully cooperate. If you find yourself exploring the Bay of Kotor, a dinner at Galion Restaurant is highly recommended!
Speaking of Weather — What to Expect Year-Round?
The best time to visit Kotor and the Bay of Kotor largely depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. Weather in Montenegro varies by season, with warm, sunny summers and mild—but sometimes rainy—spring and fall months.
We visited in May and experienced a mix of sunshine and light rain. While spring offers fewer crowds and comfortable temperatures, it’s not uncommon to encounter occasional showers.
Summer (June through August) brings the best weather in Kotor, with hot temperatures, clear skies, and ideal conditions for boating and swimming—though it’s also peak tourist season.
Shoulder seasons like May and September strike a balance, offering pleasant weather with fewer crowds, but it’s still wise to pack layers and a light rain jacket.
No matter when you visit, the dramatic scenery of the Bay of Kotor makes it a destination worth experiencing in any season.

Our stay at Apartment Sea View via booking.com was more than just a place to sleep— it was the perfect home base for exploring Kotor. With a private parking garage (a huge perk in this area), options for laundry, and a premium coffee setup, it had all the comforts that make travel feel effortless.
The real highlight, though, was the balcony—offering sweeping views over the Bay of Kotor and up toward the iconic Ladder of Kotor. It was the kind of view you never get tired of, whether you’re starting your morning or winding down at sunset.
To make it even more special, our host welcomed us with a bottle of homemade local red wine—a small but incredibly thoughtful touch that set the tone for our stay.

Even with rain and low-hanging fog rolling through the bay, Kotor was absolutely unforgettable—proving that this destination doesn’t need perfect weather to leave a lasting impression.

I must admit—watching a giant cruise ship do a sharp 180* turn in the middle of the narrow ‘ria’ from your balcony is very entertaining to witness every night… watch for yourself👇
