Typical driving times include:
- 2–2.5 hours from Zagreb
- 3–3.5 hours from Zadar
- 4–5 hours from Split
Most travelers rent a car, which is the easiest way to explore the park and stop at scenic viewpoints along the way.
If you prefer public transportation, there are buses from major cities like Zagreb, Zadar, and Split that drop you near the park entrances. Keep in mind that bus schedules can be limited, so planning ahead is key, especially during the busy summer tourist season.

The trails open at 7am in the summer (8am rest of the year), and get reallyyy busy by about 10am with tourists/tour bus groups. Getting there earlier allows a much quieter, less crowded morning experience.

The park has two main entrances, each offering different starting points for hiking routes with their own advantages/disadvantages.
Entrance 1:

Based on recommendations we chose Route C, one of the most popular routes in the park.
The hike includes some mild uphill walking, but the reward is incredible—you’re constantly walking toward waterfalls, meaning the best views are always in front of you.
Starting from Entrance 1, Route C includes:

- The Lower Lakes
- Panoramic boardwalk views

Where to Stay Near Plitvice Lakes?

Staying near the park is highly recommended, especially if you want to arrive early and avoid crowds. For those on a road trip through Croatia, staying near Plitvice allows you to easily continue on to Zadar, Split, or the coast the next day.
For travelers looking for more comfort or amenities, the nearby town of Korenica also has a few hotels and restaurants within a short drive to the park.
*Travel tip: Staying in Grabovac, Croatia (6 km drive from Entrance 1 allowed us to beat crowds and tour bus swarms by a few hours!

At the recommendation of Ms. Zrinka, we enjoyed dinner at Plum Bistro & Cafe in Grabovac and it did not disappoint—fresh, flavorful dishes with a cozy, welcoming atmosphere made it the perfect pre-hike meal.
The next morning, Zrinka and her daughter went above and beyond, preparing an unlimited breakfast to fuel us for the day ahead. They even packed us a lunch for the hike, which was incredibly thoughtful and made exploring the park so much easier.
Little touches like this—warm hospitality, homemade food, and helpful tips—really made our stay feel personal and memorable.

Absolutely.
Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of the most beautiful national parks in Europe and an essential stop on any Croatia road trip.
Between the turquoise lakes, cascading waterfalls, scenic boardwalks, and peaceful forest trails, every step feels magical.
Staying nearby the night before allowed us to beat the crowds and enjoy the park at a relaxed pace, which made the experience even more memorable.
