Experience the Pearl of the Adriatic

Dubrovnik, Croatia, is one of the Adriatic’s most iconic destinations.

This UNESCO World Heritage city is renowned for its medieval city walls, historic limestone streets, and breathtaking sea views. From history and culture to beaches and world-class dining, Dubrovnik offers the perfect mix for any traveler looking for relaxation or exploration.

We wrapped up our Croatia, Bosnia, and Montenegro 2+ week road trip with six days and five nights in Dubrovnik,  exploring at a relaxed pace. By splitting our stay between two accommodations, we got a complete feel for the city—from cozy corners of the Old Town to luxury with a view of the bay.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or returning to soak in more Adriatic charm, here are our top 10 unmissable things to see, do, and experience in Dubrovnik:

1. The Ploče Gate

Ploče Gate is the eastern entrance to Dubrovnik’s Old Town and a key part of its medieval defenses. It was built in the 15th century to protect the city from land and sea attacks.

Historically, the gate controlled access for travelers arriving from the east.
Today, it offers direct entry to the city walls and Old Town streets.

Ploče Gate is typically quieter than the busy Pile Gate entrance.
Fewer tour buses give the area a calmer, more local feel. Shops, bakeries, and cafés nearby make it a convenient starting point for exploring Old Town.

Game of Throne nerds: The Ploče Gate was used as the ‘Red Keep Gate’ and Cersei Lannister passes over this bridge and enters to the Red Keep after her ‘walk of shame’ at the end of season five.

Crossing over the bridge and through the Ploče Gate, you find yourself walking down St. Dominic Street.

2. St. Dominic Street

A staircase made of stone steps leads up to an entrance with intricate archways, flanked by historic buildings featuring textured stone walls and barred windows.
Dominican Monastery

St. Dominic Street is a picturesque cobblestone street in Dubrovnik’s Old Town, named after the adjacent Dominican Monastery. The monastery was built during the 14th and 15th centuries and remains one of the city’s most important religious landmarks.

A wide stone staircase leads up to the church entrance, creating one of Dubrovnik’s most photogenic spots. Inside, visitors can see a golden Crucifix dating back to the 14th century, along with other historic religious artwork.

Many other Game of Thrones market scenes also take place here on St. Dominic Street — It is here that the Gold Cloaks kill one of King Robert’s illegitimate sons, and it’s also where Tyrion and Bronn witness a protest speech in season 2.

St. Dominic Street links the Ploče Gate with the main street, Stradun.

3. Stradun

A busy street scene in Dubrovnik, featuring historic stone buildings with green shutters, outdoor cafes, and a cloudy sky with the sun peeking through.
Stradun, Dubrovnik Main Street

Continuing our stroll along St. Dominic Street, we soon arrived at the StradunDubrovnik’s iconic main street within the city walls.

Stretching nearly a quarter mile from Pile Gate in the west to the Clock Tower in the east, the Stradun is lined with historic buildings, cafés, and shops, making it the heart of the city’s Old Town.

Throughout history, Stradun has been a center for festivals, markets, and public gatherings. Walking the street gives visitors a sense of Dubrovnik’s medieval charm and vibrant city life.

4. Jesuit Stairs

The beautiful and elegant Baroque Jesuit stairs are located on the south side of Gundulic Square and leads up to the Church of St. Ignatius and the Collegium Ragusinum.

The staircase is often used for events, photography, and as a scenic spot for visitors.
From the top, you get a striking view of Gundulić Square and the surrounding Old Town streets.

The famous “Walk of Shame” scene in Season 5 involved Cersei Lannister being forced to walk naked through the streets of King’s Landing beginning at the top of the Jesuit Staircase.

Later that evening, we went made a memory of a lifetime–

5. Explore city walls by Karaka BOAT

Sail the same boat as Daenerys from Game of Thrones (!)

A few months before our trip, for Valentine’s Day, I surprised Jeff with tickets for a sunset dinner cruise on the Karaka the same boat that Daenerys sailed on in Game of Thrones. As the boat rounded the corner, everyone’s eyes went wide in awe at this massive traditional Karaka replica, seemingly appearing out of nowhere against the skyline.

Booking our tickets months in advance paid off—it was a magical start to an unforgettable evening cruising around Dubrovnik

The cruise exceeded every expectation, combining stunning Adriatic views with a unique Game of Thrones experience.

How much does the Karaka ride cost and what does it include?

Sunset cruises on the historic Karaka ship typically cost about €45–€60 per person. These prices are for the 1.5‑hour sail around Dubrovnik’s harbor at sunset.

Prices usually include a welcome glass of sparkling wine and at least one additional drink onboard.

When we stepped onto the boat, we were greeted by a “King” in full costume (yes, full regalia—crown, robes, the whole works) holding a glass of bubbly to welcome us aboard.

It was a fun and unexpected start to our sunset dinner cruise, setting the tone for an evening of stunning Dubrovnik views, delicious food, and a touch of Game of Thrones magic.

If you look closely, we are getting a sword salute sendoff at the end of the pier 😂

Sailing Past Dubrovnik in a Karaka Boat: An Experience of a Lifetime

After climbing aboard, my breath was completely taken away—seeing Dubrovnik from the sea offers a perspective unlike anything from the streets. The city walls, terracotta rooftops, and historic fortifications shimmered against the Adriatic waters, creating a view that feels both grand and intimate.

Gliding along the coastline, the panoramic views of Dubrovnik’s Old Town from the water are truly unforgettable, making the sunset cruise an essential experience for any visitor.

*Pro tip: take a Dramamine before any boat trips around the city walls– the waves can get pretty wild!

Cruising along Dubrovnik’s city walls aboard the Karaka ship from Game of Thrones, champagne in hand and the sun setting, was an absolutely magical experience

This was an experience that we definitely recommend if visiting Dubrovnik.

6. Hike the City Walls by FOOT

And understand the history as you walk

No trip to Dubrovnik is complete without exploring the city walls. Stretching 1.2 miles (nearly 2 km) around the Old Town, the walls were originally built in the 13th century and reinforced over time to defend the city from invaders.

Some sections are as high as 82 feet (25 meters), providing panoramic views of the terracotta rooftops, the sparkling Adriatic Sea, and the nearby Elafiti Islands.

💶 City Walls Ticket Prices (per 2026 guide)

  • Children under 7: Free
  • Children & students (ages 7–18): ~€15
  • Adults: ~€40 per person during the main season (spring–fall)

Walking Time: A complete walk usually takes 1.5–2 hours, depending on stops for photos and exploring towers.

Travel tip: Start exploring the city walls either early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid crowds and explore the walls in relative peace.

What is included in the city walls ticket?

The 40 Euros ticket covers the main walls, Minčeta tower (highest viewpoint), the western outer wall, the Upper corner tower with the Foundry Museum, Fort Bokar, the archaeological site of St. Andrew’s and the separate Fort of St. Lawrence

The admission ticket is valid for 72 hours from the first scan.

Map showing areas of destruction during the Homeland War in the 1990s, Dubrovnik – already a UNESCO Heritage Site – came under attack.

What Happened During the 1990s Conflict in the Balkans?

At the gated entrances to Dubrovnik’s Old Town, a city map marks the locations where bombs were dropped during the Homeland War in the 1990s. Unfortunately during the siege, 194 Croatian troops and 88 civilians were killed.

It’s a sobering reminder of the challenges this historic UNESCO World Heritage Site has endured, and reviewing the map helps visitors understand the city’s remarkable history.

More than half of the Old Town’s buildings were destroyed or damaged, but they have since been rebuilt with bright orange tiled roofs, creating the iconic view Dubrovnik is known for today.

To take in the full panorama, we began our morning hike along the preserved city walls, built between the 12th and 17th centuries, entering near the Ploče Gate.

The city walls now represent a sense of freedom.

Walking the walls gives you a 360-degree perspective of Dubrovnik’s history, architecture, and coastal beauty—it’s truly an unforgettable experience.

Surprises inside the Dubrovnik City Walls

While strolling along the historic Dubrovnik city walls, we stumbled upon a local artist capturing the city’s charm in delicate watercolors. Each piece showcased the terracotta rooftops, the sparkling Adriatic, and the unique character of Old Town Dubrovnik.

We paused to admire the vibrant artwork and the skill behind every brushstroke. One painting in particular—one on the left—spoke to us instantly, and it traveled with us in my backpack, now proudly displayed on our travel wall at home.

It’s moments like these—small, unexpected encounters—that make exploring so memorable. Beyond the iconic views and historic architecture, the city walls offer glimpses into local life, creativity, and culture that you can’t experience anywhere else.

An artist sits at an easel in a stone-walled room displaying various watercolor paintings on the walls, featuring landscapes and architectural scenes.

What is Fort Lovrijenac?

Think: Dubrovnik’s “Gibraltar”

Perched on a cliff just outside Dubrovnik’s western walls, Fort Lovrijenac offers stunning views of the Old Town and Adriatic Sea. Built in the 11th century, the fortress defended the city against Venetian attacks and has remained a symbol of Dubrovnik’s independence.

Visitors can explore its thick stone walls, bastions, and terraces, imagining the battles fought here centuries ago. The fort also served as a Game of Thrones filming location, representing the Red Keep in King’s Landing. Climbing to the top rewards you with one of the best panoramic viewpoints in Dubrovnik.

Travel tip: Combine your visit with a walk along the city walls for unbeatable views of the fort and harbor.

As we finished our lap around Dubrovnik’s city walls, we stumbled upon the famous Buža Bar, perched on the cliffs just outside the walls. This cliffside bar is a local favorite, known for its chill vibe, stunning sea views, and refreshing drinks.

7. Experience Buza Bar

There are two cliffside bars tucked into the walls of Old Town Dubrovnik — Buža and Buža II — both named after the Croatian word buža, which means “hole in the wall.”

Both Buza Bars are accessed through small openings in the ancient city walls and seem almost hidden until you find them, which is part of their charm. The original Buža sits lower on the cliffs with direct sea access and more of that classic cliff‑hangout vibe, while Buža II, just a short walk further along the rocks, offering a slightly more relaxed terrace above the water with equally stunning views.

Travel tip: Both Buža Bars are cash-only and small, so arrive early to grab a terrace spot, especially in peak season. While tables are limited, rocks are not — so order a drink and find an open space to sit!

When to Visit Buza Bar?

Buza Bar typically opens early (around 8 AM) and stays lively until late (around 2 AM), so it works for both daytime breaks and evening drinks. Interestingly, people clamor here 2-3 hours before the sunset times … but honestly, there are better places to watch the sunset in Dubrovnik and better times to visit the Buza Bar than sunset.

8. Visit one of Dubrovnik’s world class restaurants

Restaurant 360 offers a refined evening escape with its Michelin-starred dining experience

Reservations should be made **well in advance—often a month or more ahead—**as tables are limited and demand is high..

Restaurant 360 – Dubrovnik

This restaurant perched along the castle wall delivers an elegant atmosphere, exceptional service, and creative Mediterranean cuisine with stunning views of the Old Town walls.

Tasting menus typically feature multiple courses paired with wines, showcasing fresh, local ingredients and refined presentation.

Our meals included 6 courses of foods, desserts, and wines. PLUS an incredible sunset view overlooking the old town harbor.

If you’re seeking fine dining in Dubrovnik, Restaurant 360 is a must-visit for both food and ambiance. This Michelin restaurant was 5 stars in our book! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

9. Cable Car to Mount Srd

One experience we wish we could have done in Dubrovnik was ride the famous Dubrovnik Cable Car to the top of Mount Srđ.

The lower cable car station was just a short walk from our Airbnb, making it one of the easiest viewpoints to access in Dubrovnik. In just a few minutes, the cable car climbs high above Old Town, offering spectacular panoramic views of Dubrovnik’s terracotta rooftops, the Adriatic Sea, and the surrounding Dalmatian coastline.

Unfortunately, during our visit the cable car was closed due to worker protests and strikes, so we weren’t able to make the ride ourselves.

We’ll have to save this iconic Dubrovnik viewpoint for our next visit—because the views from the top of Mount Srđ are said to be some of the best in all of Croatia, especially at sunset.

10. Get out of the Old Town to explore more of Dubrovnik!

After a few days exploring Dubrovnik’s bustling Old Town, we headed to the quieter outskirts for a special surprise.

Don’t get me wrong — Dubrovnik’s Old Town is breathtaking, but the city has much more to explore beyond the walls. Venture to Lapad, Gruž, and other quieter neighborhoods to discover beaches, local markets, and seaside cafés.

Exploring beyond the Old Town gives a richer sense of Dubrovnik’s culture and daily life. By splitting our stay between two different areas, we experienced completely different vibes — from historic streets to tranquil coastal views.
